How to install iPhone Themes

Here is a complete guide of How to install Iphone Themes:

If a theme is not available through the installer, you will have to add it manually yourself. First, you will need to use the installer.app and install OpenSSH on your iPhone.

You will then need to install WinSCP on your computer. Macs come with openssh but if you’d like some alternatives check here. To connect to WinSCP you will need to go into your settings on your iPhone into Wi-fi, click on the little arrow next to the Wi-Fi you are connected to and get the ip address. Now open WinSCP on your computer….the Host Name is your ip address (with the periods) the user name is root and the password is alpine. Don’t worry about the Private key file, you don’t need to put anything there. Hit login.

Once WinSCP opens, the themes go into the var/root/library/SummerBoard/Themes folder on 1.1.2 and lower and in the var/mobile/library/SummerBoard/Themes folder on 1.1.3 and above. . Once you are in that folder you will see all the themes that are on your iPhone. This is where you will want to add your new themes.

Create a folder somewhere on your computer that is the title of the theme you would like to add (ex…Chalkwork) then inside of the Chalkwork folder create another folder called Icons (with a capital “I”). Inside the Icons folder put all of the icon images that you would like to have. They must be named the same as the Title of the app, starting with a capital (Ex…Calendar, Customize, SummerBoard, Photos, Stocks….). You can also add a Dock and Wallpaper to the Chalkwork folder, they also need to be capitalized (do not put them in the Icons folder…just in the main Chalkwork folder). Once you have a folder of the theme with a folder of icons inside it you just drag the whole folder, Chalkwork, into Themes on WinSCP and hit Copy. Once it is done transferring you can go on your iPhone into SummerBoard and select the theme you just added. Note: your iPhone has to be on for the file to transfer!

If you are downloading a theme that is in a zip file…you will have to open the zip file and then create a folder on your computer that is the same name as the theme you are trying to download. Then copy the Icons folder from the zip file into the folder you created on your computer. This unzips the file so that you can add it to SummerBoard through WinSCP. You can also copy the wallpaper and dock out of the zip file into the file you created if you would like them too.

Now this is really unexpected ! The next Generation 3G enabled Iphone is going to cost you…hold your breath…$199 or mere INR 8400/- . Now that is a real news.

New 3g Iphone

Last month I had written about Apple Iphone officially coming to India through 2 Indian mobile operators. Rumours were rife that Iphone in India (without 3g) will be introduced in India for a price point above 25000/-. I got quite a few comments stating that Apple is using India as a dumping phone for their first generation phones.

Jury is still out on whether this version of the Iphone will come to India or not. But rumours have it that Bharti will be introducing this phone in the market later this year.

Whether or not it gets launched in India, IPhone lovers can surely get their hands on these not-so-pricey phones through grey market for around 10,000 rupees within days from its launch in U.S. The new IPhone, looks very similar to the old one but has a glossy black or white plastic in place of a metal back cover.

Even though this next generation IPhone has much lower price point, it has host of mouth watering features built into it.

The best part is that new Iphone runs on third-generation (3G) wireless networks and loads Internet pages nearly 3 times faster than its previous avatar. The Iphone has much improved email features too.

The new Iphone also includes satellite navigation capability and comes with a inbuilt 8GB memory, which I think is more than sufficient to most of us.

A new service, “MobileMe,” will automatically send e-mail and other information to iPhones, similar to Microsoft Corp’s Exchange e-mail server product. The pay service will replace Apple’s .Mac service and offer Web applications intended to make the phone work more like a desktop computer. (source)

You MUST look at this video to get an idea of new features that IPHONE 3G has introduced…Mouth Watering

It will not be long before we see an IPhone in the hands of every 2nd or 3rd urban mobile user.

The new Iphone sure seems to be a big threat to its competitors…!

It's an iPhone and it's 3G!

Yes, Steve Jobs has indeed unveiled a brand new 3G iPhone at the WWDC in San Francisco, and yes, Airtel and Apple will be bringing the same to India later this year.

We've always bet upon it and finally it's come true! Apple CEO Steve Jobs has lifted the wraps on iPhone II that marries features of iPhone I with 3G networking making it "twice as fast and at half the price of its predecessor". Jobs dazzled the audience with the brand new 3G iPhone at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) that opened in San Francisco today.

The Gen-Next iPhone offers faster access to Internet and email, a host of business features, and increased talk time. Most importantly, it supports 3G and WiFi and EDGE networks, capable of automatically switching between these to ensure the fastest possible download speeds.

The 3G iPhone allows multi-tasking with simultaneous voice and data communications. This means users can browse the Web, get map directions, or even check emails while on a call.

This time around, Apple seems to be targeting the business segment too, which has so far kept a safe distance from all things iPhone citing the lack of business utility features.

iPhone II bundles new iPhone 2.0 software with both the SDK and key enterprise features such as support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync to provide over-the-air push email, contact and calendar syncing, as well as remote wipe and Cisco IPsec VPN for encrypted access to corporate networks. Additionally, it incorporates the ability to read documents from Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Looks-wise the new iPhone appears sleeker than its predecessor; it has built-in GPS capability to allow location-based services. With software 2.0, users will be able to do real-time mapping and track progress, as well as mass move and delete multiple email messages, search for contacts, access a new scientific calculator, turn on parental control restrictions for specified content, save images directly from a Web page or transfer them back to the photo library on other devices, et al.

There's also a new Internet service to the new iPhone called 'MobileMe'. The service pushes email, contacts, and calendars from an online cloud to native applications on the iPhone, iPod Touch, Macs, and PCs. So forget manually checking emails or waiting for downloads or even keeping contacts and calendars continually up-to-date; changes made on one device will automatically get synced to other devices.

Another talking point to the 3G iPhone is the all new 'App Store' that gives users access to a host of applications related to games, business, news, sports, health, reference, and travel. Overall, the 3G iPhone promises 10 hours of talk time on 2G networks and 5 hours on 3G, with up to 5-6 hours of Web browsing, 7 hours of video playback, and 24 hours of audio playback.

The 3G iPhone will be available in the US on July 11 for a suggested retail price of $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model.
Meanwhile, iPhone afficianados in India take heart as Bharti Airtel and Apple have also announced that they will be bringing the highly-anticipated 3G iPhone to India later this year. Airtel customers will be able to purchase the 3G iPhone at Airtel Relationship Centers. What will the 3G iPhone cost in India, we don't know yet. Apart from India, the 3G iPhone will be made available in 69 other countries later this year.

It would be nice to customize your Sony PSP screen just as you would a Windows desktop, wouldn’t it? Well, actually you can, if you’re willing to use an unlicensed homebrew application on your PSP. I know, you have probably heard of some homebrew apps that “brick” the PSP. Believe me, those are not just scary stories, they have actually happened to some unfortunate and inexperienced users. However, the free application you can use to load themes on your PSP is apparently safe, although it is always good to exercise great caution when dealing with unlicensed releases.

The free application I am talking about is called ThemePSP v1.2, which should only be used on a PSP running on 1.5 firmware. If you do not know your PSP’s firmware version or, indeed, what “firmware” even means, then I do not recommend using this application, since your portable player could very well end up a brick. But if you feel comfortable enough to use it, then ThemePSP v1.2 can be used to flash theme packs onto your PSP screen and thus give it new custom backgrounds, font styles, colors, and more.

If you are interested in downloading a copy of this free app for your PSP, I suggest you head over to the QJ.Net Forums, the discussion board for the Quick Jump Network. You may have to register for the forum to access some features, but the registration is free and it only takes a couple of minutes to complete. To find the application, go to the subforum PSP Homebrew Discussion and look for the ThemePSP thread.

The same thread is where you can find many user-submitted theme packs you can download for free to your PSP. The files are not actually on the forum pages. Instead, the thread contains a long list of links to available PSP theme pack files. Not all of these links may be working, and the variety is limited to what others have created and uploaded. But there are still a number of interesting free downloads, especially for those who would like PSP themes centered on games (Legend of Zelda, Mortal Kombat), TV shows (The Simpsons, Prison Break), movies (The Matrix, Spiderman), and hard rock bands (Metallica, Linkin Park). There is also a theme creator available for people who would like to come up with their own PSP themes.

By the way, there is a website called ThemePSP.com that does not seem to have anything to do with the ThemePSP v1.2 mod. The ThemePSP.com is simply a website that offers free downloads of PSP wallpapers in a variety of categories. That is simple and safe enough for anyone to do. Even though ThemePSP v1.2 seems harmless, it does make some modifications to your PSP system. If you are nervous about using it, you can just download a free wallpaper for your PSP.

Want a free mobile site for your blog?

I have been seeing more and more about mobile social software. With the flood of new handheld devices and the spread of broadband access, it felt like a good time to explore options for building my own mobile site.

THE FIND: My search ended when I came across WINKsite, a service that lets you construct feature rich mobile sites in minutes.

Forums, surveys, journals, guestbooks and RSS feeds are just some of the features that you can include in your mobile site. WINKsite hosts the site for you, and makes sure it will be compatible with a variety of mobile devices. In fact they have been working on porting WINKsites to the Nintendo Wii, DS-Lite, Sony PSP, and the new Apple iPhone.

winkfront.jpg

WINKsite is also strongly positioning itself within the mobile social space by providing a range of features and site tools, which allow users to stay in touch online or via their mobile device. For instance there is the “Conversations from WINKsite” widget, which can be embedded into your blog or site. The Conversations widget tracks discussions that are using the WINKsite’s chat feature.

winkworld.jpg

THE TEST: Two weeks ago I wrote about a “mashup” I made called “Fest Mob,” which has festival goers documenting the Sundance Film Festival with their mobile phones.

Part of the “mashup” involved a mobile site I created using WINKsite. The goal was to provide a mobile version of the Fest Mob so festival goers could follow the discussion.

winkmobile.jpg

THE RESULTS: http://winksite.com/workbook/mob

THE PROS: The registration is easy and I was up and running within moments. It is possible to create a number of pages for each of your WINKsites. One of the strongest aspects of the service is the ability to pull in RSS feeds. For those looking to create a mobile version of your blog, there is an easy way to add your own feed. Unlike other services that allow for simple feed integration, WINKsite pours on the features. It is possible to add forums, surveys, chat, and even your own magazine.

THE CONS: At times the interface offers so much that it might be a bit confusing for the novice wanting to create a site. I also found myself wishing there was an easy way to integrate video, such as, a simple way to upload or link to your video files. Lastly, WINKsite could use a better directory, one that would allow users to discover interesting mobile sites easily.

OVERALL: WINKsite is amazing and an excellent way to create a rich mobile site. It is packed with features and possibilities. The service that WINKsite provides is cutting edge and allows for easy mobile site and community creation. Best of all it is ad free and will cost you nothing! With its future movement towards more social features and the promise of an easier interface, it is positioned well for the next gen in mobile site creation.

MoFuse creates a mobile version of your blog for free

Following on from my blog posts about mobile SEO and how to make your site mobile friendly a new service called MoFuse caught my eye.

MoFuse takes your existing blog and in a couple of clicks turns it into a mobile friendly site. You can even embed some php code into your Wordpress blog that redirects all mobile traffic to the mobile version of your site.

If you want to take advantage of ad revenue, Mofuse incorporates AdMob banners and Google AdSense into your mobile site. You also get analytics to see who is accessing your mobile blog.

Note that I have yet to implement the php code on blogstorm because it seems to redirect all traffic to the homepage of the mobile blog and I couldn’t figure out what would happen if a visitor arrived at an old blogstorm post.

We never seem to get round to doing enough of these How-To sort of posts, but I’m trying to knock out a few on topics that seem to come up frequently on iPhone forums and discussions - such as …

How To Connect to Your iPhone Via SSH

Topic Description: SSH (secure shell) is a network protocol that allows data to be exchanged over a secure channel, in this case between a computer and your iPhone. If you have a jailbroken iPhone, an SSH connection over a wireless network is often the best way to browse your iPhone, carry out simple file transfer back and forth to the iPhone, or manually install applications to it. This short guide provides a rundown of how to establish an SSH connection to your iPhone.

Requirements & Assumptions:

A jailbroken iPhone. For this guide we will assume you are running the current latest iPhone firmware, Version 1.1.4.

An SSH program on your computer. A couple of good free options are WinSCP for a Windows PC, and Cyberduck for a Mac.

The BSD Subsystem installed on your iPhone. You’ll find this under the System category in Installer.

OpenSSH (or another SSH variant) installed on your iPhone. This is also found under the System Category in Installer.

iPhone and computer need to be on the same (usually wireless) network. For the sake of this guide, we’ll assume both are on a home wireless network.

An ability to turn SSH On and Off on the iPhone. SSH programs on the iPhone do not create an icon on the home screen, so one of the easiest ways to do this is to use the BossPrefs application on the iPhone (to install it you’ll need to add the BigBoss source to Installer - which is http://sleepers.net/iphonerepo). There are other iPhone applications that do this as well, but BossPrefs is currenty the best of these in my view.

Steps:

  • Make a note of your iPhone’s IP address. To find this, on your iPhone go to Settings > WiFi and tap on the blue arrow to the right of the name of your home network. On the screen that comes up, note the set of numbers listed in the IP Address field.
  • Turn SSH On, on the iPhone. With BossPrefs and other similar applications, this is just a matter of tapping on the SSH entry to toggle it on and off. Please Note: it is good idea to make sure you toggle SSH back off when you are through using it.
  • Launch your SSH app on your computer. WinSCP will land you on a new ‘Session’ screen straight away. On Cyberduck, you’ll need to choose ‘Open New Connection’. See screencaps at the top of this post and below for a look at how these screens appear. Then you need to fill in a few fields to specify how you want to connect and what device you want to connect to. The fields are named slightly differently depending on which program you use, but they are similar enough that you should be able to fill them in as follows:
Hostname or Server = enter your iPhone’s IP address in this field
File Protocol = should be SCP on WinSCP and SFTP on Cyberduck
Username = enter ‘root’ (without the quotes) in this field
Password = enter ‘alpine’ in this field (without the quotes) or whatever you have changed root’s password to, if you have ever changed it.
  • Once you have entered the information as above, hit ‘Login’ on WinSCP or ‘Connect’ on Cyberduck. It may take up to 30 seconds or so to connect.
  • You will see a confirmation message asking if you will accept key exchange / connection with the device with the iPhone’s address. You’ll need to say Yes or Allow on these.

Once connected, you are presented with an Explorer-like view of the file system on the iPhone, or of the iPhone and your own computer. Once there, you can copy files and folders back and forth between the computer and iPhone.

How do I make iPhone themes? SummerBoard

SummerBoard themes are designed to be easy to make -- here's all you need to know to make a theme (or more) of your own:

SummerBoard themes reside on your iPhone in the folder below: /var/root/Library/SummerBoard/Themes/

You have a folder per theme in there, with the following structure: ThemeName/StatusBar.png - Status bar image (optional, 320x20 PNG, alpha)
ThemeName/Wallpaper.png - The wallpaper (320x480 PNG, no alpha)
ThemeName/Dock.png - The dock image for the large dock (320x91 PNG, alpha)

Then your icons (optional, 59x60 PNG, alpha) go in: ThemeName/Icons/

Name them as such: Phone.png Text.png iPod.png Clock.png etc...

When saving your graphic files be sure to use Adobe Photoshop's "Save for Web & Devices" function (or something similar). This can reduce icon sizes from ~65kb down to ~10kb for example. Optimizing your graphics is very important, It saves server bandwidth, air time for the user and space on the user's iPhone.

Also, take note that SummerBoard has various appearance settings in its Advanced section of SMBPrefs -- you can use them to your advantage -- for example, try out "Solid StatusBar" -- you'll see what I mean.

Enjoy!

SummerBoard is an extension to the iPhone's SpringBoard user experience. SummerBoard adds a variety of useful and fun features to your iPhone, including scrolling icons, wallpaper and themes!
